Mulled wine (or Gluhwein) is red wine infused with sugar and spices and served warm, usually during Winter. It is especially popular around Christmas in many European countries.
I was inspired to develop this recipe for mulled wine a few nights ago. It was pouring with rain outside and all I felt like was a glass of warm Gluhwein to remind me of our recent skiing holiday in Gstaad, Switzerland.
It is so easy to make and there is simply nothing better than having a glass or two after a long day at work to help you unwind, relax and warm up.
1 bottle of red wine
Peel and juice of 1 orange
8 cardamom pods
2 cinnamon sticks
4 star anise
1 vanilla pod, split (optional)
Place all ingredients into a pot and heat gently for at least 30 minutes to allow sugar to dissolve and flavours to infuse. Do not allow to boil, or you will burn off the alcohol.
Check seasoning and add more sugar or orange juice if needed.
Strain wine to remove all whole spices and serve warm.
